As promised, I’m back with Modern Vintage love part deux…this time, with Becca George as the object of my Girl Crush affection. Becca and Jessie make one heck of a creative Nashville wedding and event planning team–probably because they’ve been best friends for, like, ever. Like backpack through Europe best friends. And start an event business together best friends. And they’re both so darn sweet and funny, you’ll wish you were the third BFF in that equation.
Becca is the kind of the girl you’d pick as your elementary school bestie…and then hold on to. She has the kind of infectious energy that makes you want to take all of the ideas you’ve placed on your closet shelf and make them a reality. Or make them, in her words, “pin worthy.” And, really, that’s what makes Becca and Jessie such stellar planners. You’d want them to dance the night away with you at your wedding anyway. The amazingness they create (like this vintage romance shoot styled by Modern Vintage and shot by Chris + Adrienne Scott) is really just a bonus.
How did you get started in event planning?
I actually got interested in event planning after my own wedding (seven years ago). I decided I wanted to be a wedding planner somewhere in the planning process. I think most brides actually do that. I started working at Stones River Country Club in Murfreesboro and eventually became the Catering Director helping with all the events that are there. After a period of this I felt like I could feasibly make my dream a reality and took a wedding and event planning certification class. Fast forward a year and Modern Vintage is born.
What is it about your style, approach or aesthetic that sets you apart from other creatives in your field?
We really like to make sure that every wedding is different. One of our tag lines is “because your wedding is not your cousin Jane’s wedding.” We want to take the couple’s personality and bring it into their wedding regardless of what their taste and budget are. Not all weddings have a $40k (or more) budget so we like to use our resourcefulness and craftiness to make every wedding pin worthy.
What drives you to keep doing what you do?
I stinkin love it! I really do genuinely love weddings and parties. I start planning my kids’ parties months in advance. I love crafting and details. Some other driving factors are the hugs from parents and brides and grooms at the end of a reception, the look on a bride and groom’s face when they walk back down the aisle and being a constant witness to new beginnings as husband and wife.
Name your dream client.
She (wait, I guess, they–the groom is involved too) loves vintage, but we will love her even if she doesn’t. They tell us what they like and don’t like so we can make sure their wedding reflects them and not us. I really like people who are fun and realize that the details are amazing but the marriage is what they are signing up for.
When you hit a creative block, where do you go for inspiration?
I think my happy place for inspiration is on my hammock in the back yard. Oh Lord, I waste entirely too much time searching for inspiration online as well. I do look at Style Me Pretty (admit it, so does the rest of the world), Wedding Chicks, Glamour and Grace and Green Wedding Shoes. I like Oh So LovelyVintage and The Daybook Blog also. I love On to Baby for kid’s stuff. Local blogs I like are: Owl Really, Ashley’s Bride Guide, Stockroom Vintage (of course), The Budget Savvy Bride and Pizzazzerie. (And I wonder where those few hours of my day have gone…)
What’s your itinerary for a perfect day in Nashville? Where do you go, what do you eat and who do you take along with you?
In my dream world this is on a Saturday, in reality this would have to be a random Tuesday. I would get up and run then have a big greasy breakfast at home with my husband and kids. Then we would head up to Saturday Market on the square in Murfreesboro and probably spend the day at the pool or have a picnic in the park. I may have to squeeze in dinner with live music and bring your own wine at Miller’s Grocery that evening.
Name your current obsessions. When it comes to books, blogs, food, TV, movies and music (or any guilty pleasures), what are you loving now?
Obsessions. Where do I start? I love the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and Harry Potter stays on my nerdy obsession list. (I am totally planning another trip to the Wizarding World.) I love Disney World too and start planning my next Orlando trip about as soon as the last one ends. I am a crazy runner type who gets up with the sun to run. Food, always pizza. I love other things like sushi and cupcakes but pizza is my true love when it comes to food. A good white pizza will melt my heart.
TV, oh, how I miss you. Most of the TV I watch these days is Dora the Explorer and Star Wars The Clone Wars (which I secretly love). I am catching up on How I Met Your Mother on Netflix. Movies, looooved The Muppets and can’t stop singing those songs. I also loved The Hunger Games—yes, I am on that bandwagon too. (For the record, the book was way better but I still liked the movie.) Music, I love The Beatles (always), show tunes, Katie Herzig, Caitlin Rose, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors and Needtobreathe.
