For the second set of the lakeside engagement shoot of Carli + Josh (you can see Part 1 here), Alissa Saylor envisioned a dreamy marshmallow roast. So I created a vintage picnic that was equal parts cozy, romantic and whimsical. Plenty of furry pillows and colorful vintage quilts nestled under an old tree provided the perfect nook for Carli + Josh to settle in to roast some marshmallows…and there were plenty of those around. I sprinkled two large bags of marshmallows around the set!
I also attempted to make some marshmallow garlands–such a sticky, messy nightmare of a craft. Let’s just say that between the melting marshmallows and my dogs trying to eat their weight in my sugary supplies, those garlands were doomed from the start. So I used cotton to create these fluttery garlands instead–and I love the light, airy effect!
One of my favorite handcrafted elements from this shoot was the self-contained marshmallow roaster I created. All it took was a terra cot pot, some gravel and a sterno pot (which caterers use to keep food warm at buffets) to create this pretty, no-fuss tabletop roaster. I’ll be sharing some DIY instructions on how you can make your own version soon!
Alissa engraved this little wood slice plaque herself with a line from Carli + Josh’s favorite song. So sweet!
I just adore this last photo! Alissa captured a perfect moment when the sun broke through the clouds and cast the most beautiful glow on Carli + Josh. Thank you to Alissa and Carli + Josh for letting me be a part of this lovely day. It’s so inspiring to see couples so crazy in love–it gets me every time! - Elizabeth
